Known as the Hall of Sino-Soviet Friendship before 1984, Shanghai Exhibition Center was built in 1954 with the help of Soviet specialists and completed in 1955.

The whole building is unique and distinctive in structure, built in Soviet architectural style. The most magnificent part is its star-topped spire, 106 m. high. The diameter of the star is 3.5 m. In front of the main building is a large fountain, which was very rarely seen at that time.

Occupying a total area of 90,000 sq. m. and located on Nanjing Road (W.) opposite to the famous Shanghai Center, this comprehensive complex includes many facilities, including a very large show hall, about 40 show rooms and meeting rooms of varying shapes and sizes, banquet rooms, and a theater. On the fifth floor is a very fine Chinese restaurant. It also has two bowling alleys and some other restaurants.
