1896: Chen Tanqiu, one of the founders of the Chinese Communist Party, was born.
1917: Cai Yuanpei, a leading liberal educator of his day, assumed the presidency of Peking University.
1965: The 1st Plenary Session of the 3rd National People’s Congress closed; Premier Zhou Enlai raised the concept of Four Modernizations for the first time.
1979: The CPC Central Commission for Discipline Inspection was established.
1992: China established diplomatic ties with Tajikistan and Ukraine.
1999: The Rainbow Bridge of Qijiang Country, Chongqing, suddenly collapsed, killing 40 people and injuring 14.
