Sergeant Black Cat (黑猫警长) is an animated TV series created by Shanghai Animation Film Studio in 1984, popular among post-80s children. Its first run consisted of five episodes, the success of which prompted CCTV to create and release 12 more episodes in 1993.

In 2010, the Sergeant Black Cat characters were brought back for a feature-length film, and their antics were adapted into a story to raise awareness about terrorism, environmental protection and legal construction. Sergeant Black Cat’s long-time enemy, the rat An Ear, was made to be even craftier and more menacing. The film included an all-star voice line-up, including well-known dubbing actor Li Yang, who was once the voice of Monkey King and the Chinese Donald Duck, child actor Lin Miaoke and Ju Ping, a veteran hostess of children’s programs.

A popular cartoon character, Sergeant Black Cat also became a big target for publication and modern drama. Shanghai Animation Film Studio and Xuanran Company are working together to prolong the black cat’s legend to more than 100 episodes, which will be in 2-D and 3-D, and attract a new generation of Sergeant Black Cat fans.
