Zhu Naizheng (朱乃正), former deputy president of the China Academy of Art, was a distinguished painter, calligrapher and educator. He died on July 25, 2013, at the age of 77.

Born in Haiyan of Zhejiang Province on Nov. 25, 1935, Zhu entered the China Academy of Art in 1953, under the guidance of famous Chinese painters such as Wu Zuoren.

He graduated in 1958 and was assigned to Qinghai Province one year later. He worked on the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau for 21 years and the area’s distinctive landscape greatly influenced his painting style.

During his tenure on the plateau, he worked as deputy chairman of the Qinghai Artist Association and as member of the Standing Committee of the Qinghai People’s Congress. In 1980, he returned to Beijing to take up a teaching position at the China Academy of Art.

His oil paintings, integrating the essence of Chinese water painting and exploring the poetic beauty of nomadic life across the plateau, reflect his early life in Qinghai.
