Located near the largest business center in the southwest of Shanghai, Xujiahui Commercial City, this cathedral of medieval Gothic architecture looks very magnificent and appealing. It is generally considered the most famous cathedral and one of the earliest grand structures in the history of Shanghai.

The cathedral has two bell towers, one on either side and each 60 m tall. Its red bricks and Jin Shan stones are so attractive the passers-by cannot but stop to take a careful look at the building.

The cathedral is large enough to accommodate 3,000 worshippers at the same time. Before 1949, it was the Catholic center for the south region of the Yangtze River and now it still remains the center of Catholic activities in Shanghai.
