With the Kuomintang's Nanjing government toppled in April 1949, the liberation of China progressed quickly. On September 25, 1949, then general commander of Xinjiang Tao Chiyu declared that the region had broken away from the Kuomintang government and was ready to embrace the People's rule, signifying the region's peaceful liberation. On October 12, the People's Liberation Army entered Xinjiang.
