Xanadu has been included on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

Xanadu (元上都) is an over 740-year-old historical site located in the Zhenglan Grasslands of northern China's Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region. It has been included on the World Heritage List. Its inscription was approved during the 36th session of the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) World Heritage Committee in St. Petersburg, Russia, on June 29, 2012.

Xanadu encompasses the remains of Kublai Khan's capital city which was established in 1256. It was the base from where Kublai Khan established the Yuan Dynasty (1271-1368), a dynasty that ruled over China for almost a century and extended the nation’s boundaries far across Asia.

The Xanadu site features the remains of the ancient city, including temples, palaces, tombs, nomadic encampments and several water conservancy works.

So far, a total of 42 Chinese properties, including 30 cultural ones, have been included on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
