On October 21, 1997, The Cultural and Civilization of China series of books, the biggest joint publishing project ever between the US and Chinese publishing industries, had its inaugural volume, Three Thousand Years of Chinese Painting, published.

Three Thousand Years of Chinese Painting, started in 1990 and taking seven years to complete, contains 330 illustrations and more than 300,000 words written by six eminent specialists from the U.S. and China. The book spans over 3,000 years and focuses primarily on the origins of Chinese paintings, genres and artists. It also embodies the works of many museums and collectors both in China and the world. This set of books is from the Foreign Languages Press and the Yale University Press and is written in three languages: Chinese, English and French.
