Tang Can
Tang Can (汤灿) is a rising soprano of Chinese folk songs. She came into the spotlight with the song "Bless my country," and her unique singing style became known nationwide. She was later dubbed as the "chic queen of folk songs."
Tang was born on June 12, 1975 in Zhuzhou City, Hunan Province. She received Bachelor's degree in Wuhan Conservatory of Music. In 1996 she enrolled into the China Oriental Song& Dance Ensemble and became a solo singer. In 2008, she became the first soprano to hold a solo concert in Greece, a reciprocal performance for Greece and its performers at its "cultural year" events held in China throughout the previous year. Currently, Tang is being tutored by Jin Tielin, the famous vocal educator from China Conservatory of Music.
In late 2011, rumors spread that Tang was involved in corruption and was interrogated by the Central Commission for Discipline Inspection. She has so far refused to directly respond to the rumors, while a liaison of hers named Xiao Li (likly an alias) was quoted by the media as saying that the investigation was merely a vile rumor initiated from Weibo (a Chinese microblog platform simillar to Twitter), and that it should not be trusted.
According to media reports, she briefly dated promising film director Lu Chuan, known for his widely acclaimed movie, "City of Life and Death." In 2011, Tang starred in the patriotic TV drama, "The Genesis of New China," in which she played the versatile diplomat Soong May-ling.
