Sun Yat-sen Mausoleum
The Sun Yat-sen Mausoleum is at the southern piedmont of Zijin (Purple) Peak of Zhongshan Mountain in the eastern suburbs of Nanjing. It was designed by a well-known contemporary Chinese architect named Lu Yanzhi. The construction began on March 12, 1926, and was completed in 1929. On June 1 of the same year, the remains of Dr. Sun Yat-sen (Sun Zhongshan) were moved from Beijing to the mausoleum. The mausoleum covers an area of over 3,000 hectares with a construction area of 80,000 sq m. It is open to the public since 1961.
The shape of the mausoleum resembles a gigantic "Bell of Freedom" overall, with a monumental archway, a path leading up to the tomb, the tomb gatetower, a stele pavilion, the memorial hall and the tomb mound, all lining up along its central axis.
In front of the Mausoleum there is an open space, on the south of which stands the bronze statue of Dr. Sun Yat-sen.
