Once a landmark of Harbin, St. Nicholas Church is one of the most reputed Eastern Orthodox Churches in China. It is situated in the center of the Central Square of Nangang District, nowadays Museum Square.

The design of the church was done in St. Petersburg, with approval by Czar Nicolas II, after whom it was named. The construction of the church was completed in December 1900. The portrait of the Saint Mother and murals in the church were painted by a Russian painter and the bell and artifacts of the church came from Moscow. Shortly after its completion, other buildings such as the office building of the Zhongdong Railway Administration, Harbin Railway Station, the private residences of some senior officials of the Railway Administration, as well as the Moscow Shopping Center (now the Heilongjiang Museum) were close-by.
