Shedong Mountain, one of the “AA” state level scenic spots, is located in the west of Nianzi Mountain, Qiqihar City, Heilongjiang Province, covering an area of 300 hectare, with its highest peak 406 meters over sea level.

Within the resort, there are undulating ridges and peaks and rugged odd stones. In particular, the natural giant Buddha with a head of 4 meters high and 3 meters wide is the very image of Rulai Buddha, which has been authenticated as “rare statue across the country” by Buddhism Association. There are also various poem stele inscriptions, ancient plain and elegant pavilions, platforms and buildings with remote and rich cultural flavor. Shedong Mountain is also a discovering place of Paleolithic culture, where stone sword, stone axe, stone artifact and mammoth ivory have been excavated, thus the site of Shedong Mountain is of great value in historical research. In 1987, the spot was listed as a “key historical and cultural site under the protection of municipality” by Qiqihar Municipal Government.

An ancient legend about Shedong Mountain cannot be ignored. A famous writer in the Qing Dynasty wrote in Longcheng Outdated Story, “The Russian were building Dongqing Railway, when a snake appeared. The Russian attacked it with distant cannons, but in vain. The snake burst with anger and killed a number of Russians by beating stones. Local people regarded the snake as god, thus prayed often. So, it was also known as a cave of heavenly being”. Shedong Mountain was thus named.
