Protestantism

Protestantism reached China in the early 18th century and became more widespread after the Opium War. Between 1842 and 1932, more than 100 Protestant sects were established in China, divided among British, US, French, German and other foreign control. After the Boxer Uprising of 1900, the Protestant missions moved into cultural areas, opening schools, hospitals and other institutions in China.

As foreign missionaries dominated the management of personnel and economic affairs of the church, they were much resented by the Chinese people and patriotic Chinese Christians.
