Laojundong Daoguan

The Laojun Dong Daoguan (老君洞道观Supreme Master Temple) was originally a place where the Zhengyi (Orthodox Oneness) sect performed its rites.

During Qing Dynasty Emperor Qianlong's reign (1736-95), Zhu Yipin, a disciple of the Longmen (Dragon Gate) sect of Beijing's White Cloud Temple, became the abbot of the Supreme Master Temple. Therefore, it became a center of Quanzhen (Complete Perfection) Daoism.

Many precious cultural relics are preserved in the temple. Among dozens of carved stones, one was inscribed犹龙 (you long, like a dragon), which was how Confucius praised Lao Zi, and another carved with the words 紫气东来 (ziqi dong lai, purple cloud from the east), which refers to Hangu Pass guardian Yin Xi’s meeting with Lao Zi on his journey to the west.
