Jacob Rosenfeld, MD, was born and educated in Austria and an activist in the Social Democratic Party. Imprisoned in a concentration camp and later exiled following Hitler's occupation of Austria, Rosenfeld decided to come to China.
He arrived in Shanghai in 1939 and joined with the New Fourth Army in Yancheng, Jiangsu Province, two years later. For the next decade, he devoted himself to the people's army.
