Hukou Waterfall

The Hukou Waterfall (壶口瀑布), the second largest in China, is located 165 km to the west of Fenxi City, Shanxi Province, and 50 km to the east of Yichuan, Shaanxi Province. The width of the waterfall changes with the season, usually 30 m wide but increasing to 50 m during flood season. It has a drop of over 20 m. When the Yellow River is blocked by mountains on both sides, its width is abruptly narrowed down to 20-30 m. It rushes down from the narrowed mountain mouth, forming a grand waterfall, as if water is pouring down from a huge pot. Hence its name Hukou (literally "Kettle Spout") Waterfall.
