The Federation of Chinese Journalism Societies was a group engaged in journalism research. It was established on December 6, 1984 on the sidelines of the National Journalism Societies Conference (Dec. 4-6) in Yantai in East China's Shandong Province. The conference passed the 'Constitution of Federation of Chinese Journalism Societies' and determined the main tasks of the federation – namely that, under the guidance of Marxism and Mao Zedong Thought, the federation should promote research on journalism-related issues and organize discussions on the theories, practice and history of journalism as well as professional training. The federation should also promote international academic exchanges.

The federation's members include journalism societies in the provinces and autonomous regions. It has a standing committee of head of societies and an academic research committee. The federation holds academic meetings annually and organizes news story and academic papers evaluation.

The first president of the federation was Hu Jiwei, president of the Capital Journalism Society.
