Famen Temple (法门寺 Temple of Dharma Gate) lies in Fufeng County 120 km west of Xi'an. It is a universally well-known temple housing a finger-bone relic of Sakyamuni. First built in the Eastern Han Dynasty (25-220), the temple was destroyed and rebuilt several times in ensuing dynasties. During a renovation in 1987, an underground chamber was discovered beneath the ruins of the pagoda base in which more than 400 pieces of rare cultural relics, including the finger-bone relic and three imitated ones made of jade. The relic has been exhibited in some countries and regions where Buddhism is practiced, including Thailand, South Korea, and China's Taiwan Province and Hong Kong SAR.
