Sitting on Tianwei Road in Hebei District, Dabeiyuan (Monastery of Great Mercy) (http://www.china.org.cn/english/olympic/218529.htm) is the largest Buddhist temple in Tianjin. Built in 1611 and expanded in 1940, it was partially destroyed in the 1976 earthquake and was only restored in 1980. The monastery houses hundreds of Buddhist statues from different dynasties. Before 1956, the monastery contained a skull relic of Monk Xuanzang, the Tang monk who went to ancient India to learn Buddhism. As the monk studied Buddhism in Nalanda for a long time during his stay in India, the relic was given to it as a token of friendship between China and India.
