Though McDonald's entered the Hong Kong market as early as 1975, the fast food giant did not set up shop on China's mainland until October 8, 1990, when its first branch opened in Shenzhen at Xihua Palace on Jiefang Road. The Shenzhen McDonald's, a HK$40 million investment, was a wholly-owned subsidiary of McDonald's (Hong Kong) Co., Ltd. In the ensuing years, McDonald's experienced unanticipated success in the Chinese market, and today the yellow "M" can be seen throughout large- and medium-sized cities across China.

The first Shenzhen branch of McDonald’s seated 500.
