The museum is the national museum of the railway system. It specializes in collecting, storing, displaying, exhibiting and studying the cultural relics concerning railways.

It is a cultural site for protecting the railway heritages, publicizing the railway technologies, and popularizing the railway construction achievements. In the exhibition hall covering an area of 16,500 square meters, there are about 40 locomotives on display.

Among them, there is China's earliest steam engine locomotive with number series beginning with O, foreign locomotives used in old China, the first domestic steam engine, gas engine and electric engine locomotives manufactured since 1949, the famous Mao Zedong Train, Zhu De Train, the special trains for state leaders, various railway carriages and wagons etc.

The 4,000-square-meter comprehensive exhibition room presents in front of the audience Chinese railway development, railway construction achievements, and railway scientific knowledge.

A large number of real objects, models, photos, charts and multi-media give a vivid introduction to the development of China Railway in the past century.
