China's top-level domain

On Nov. 28, 1990, on behalf of China, Professor Qian Tianbai registered the top-level domain ".cn" and set up servers outside China. Since then, China has had its own unique top-level domain.

Professor Qian was born in Wuxi, Jiangsu province, and graduated from Tsinghua University. He headed the China branch of the Internet Society in the Asia-Pacific region. He worked as an information security expert for the Information Work Leading Group of the State Council. He was also the deputy director of the Work Committee of the China Internet Network Information Center. On Sept. 20, 1987, he sent China's first email via the internet to West Germany's University of Karlsruhe.

He passed away in Beijing on May 8, 1998.
