China's first feature film

On September 29, 1913, China's first feature film, Nan Fu Nan Qi (A Couple in Difficulty), was shown in Shanghai. Although Chinese film had started more than 10 years before this one, the previous films only featured actions without plots and some segments of drama. Themed on a custom of mercenary marriage, the film described how a matchmaker setup two strangers for marriage. It was written by Zheng Zhengqiu, jointly directed by Zheng and Zhang Shichuan and screened by the Asia Film and Theater Company.
