Chengdu-Chongqing electric railway

The Chengdu-Chongqing electric railway was completed on December 24, 1987. The electrification project increased the annual transportation capacity of the railway from 6.1 million tons to 13 million tons.

The original construction of the Chengdu-Chongqing railway, which connects the two big cities in southwest China (Chengdu and Chongqing), was completed on July 1, 1952. It spanned 505-kilometer and was the first railway to be built after the founding of the People's Republic of China. The line had been rebuilt several times to meet the transportation of needs of China's developing economy. In March 1980, the electrification project begun to facilitate economic development in southwest China.

The new electric railway appeared to reduce energy consumption as well as increasing the transportation capacity. Statistics show that after the electric railway opened, the annual energy consumption fell by 46,000 tons of standard coal.
