Dating back to the middle of the Ming Dynasty, Chaoju (Chaozhou opera) still retains elements of the Song (960-1279) and Yuan nanxi (southern drama, originating in Jiangsu and Zhejiang and older music. The singing style is rich and beautiful. Characteristic features are the acrobatic clowning, using fans and leg movements, and all kinds of lifelike mimicry. Chaoju draws big audiences in the Chaozhou-Shantou region of Guangdong, southern parts of Fujian and overseas Chinese communities in Southeast Asia.
