1941: The Southern Anhui Incident shook China.

1972: Marshal Chen Yi passed away.

1986: Deng Xiaoping was selected once again to be Time magazine’s Man of the Year for 1985 (now Person of the Year), having already been chosen for 1978.

1997: The State Science and Technology Commission, Chinese Academy of Sciences and Shanghai municipal government held a joint press conference in Shanghai Academic Activities Center, announcing that Chinese scientists had successfully mapped the rice genome. This was a breakthrough in the field of life sciences.
