1950: The central government issued the Order to Ban Opium and Drugs that banned the planting, transportation, manufacture and sale of opium. Violators would be severely punished, while the government compensated people who still possessed the drug.
1962: Hu Shi, a philosopher and essayist, died.
2003: The first national scholarships were awarded.
