The First Shanghai International Film Festival (上海电影节) opened on October 7, 1993, , becoming the cradle of Chinese film. Film producers and actors from more than 30 countries attended the festival.
Shanghai International Film Festival was the first international feature-film festival held in China. The Jin Jue Award was set up at this festival. The international Jury, chaired by Chinese director Xie Jin, included celebrities like Hector Babenco from Brazil, Paul Cox from Australia, Tsui Hark from Hong Kong, and Oliver Stone from the United States. The Taiwanese film "Silent Hill" won the "Best Film Award."
The festival concluded one week later on October 14.
