Yueyang Tower

Yueyang Tower stands by the Dongting Lake in the western part of Yueyang City. It was a tower where, during the Three Kingdoms Period (220-280), General Lu Su of the Kingdom of Wu reviewed the naval parade. Along with Yellow Crane Tower in Wuhan and Prince Teng's Pavilion in Nanchang, it is listed as one of the Three Great Towers in China. The fame of the building is largely due to Yue yang lou ji (Remarks on the Yueyang Tower) by Fan Zhongyan (989-1052), a great man of letters in the Northern Song Dynasty (960-1127) in response to the completion of another rebuilding of the tower.

First built in 210, the building underwent a number of renovations and expansions. Now 19 meters high, it is a majestic three-story structure ingeniously designed. Without a single iron nail or crossbeam, it has survived approximately 1,800 years.
