Xuanzang (玄奘) (602-664), originally named Chen Wei, was a Tang Dynasty monk.

In 627, he set out from Chang'an for India. He passed through Gansu, Xinjiang and Central Asia and, after much hardship, finally reached India, where he visited many famous temples. He studied Buddhist classics and learned Buddhist doctrines from Indian monk scholars.

After returning to Chang'an, he translated 75 Buddhist scriptures (1,335 volumes) into Chinese. He also wrote an account of his trip, entitled Great Tang Records of the Western Regions, an important reference for researchers in the history and geography of ancient India, Nepal, Pakistan and Central Asia.
