On September 28, 1868, the Southern China Manufacturing Bureau in Shanghai launched China's first steamship. One of the biggest mechanical ships in the country, it was designed by patriotic scientist Xu Shou (1818-1884) and his son Xu Jianyin (1845-1901).

The ship had a capability of carrying up to 600 tons and 392 HP, and was armed with eight canons. The Xus named the ship "Tianji." The father and son later built several other ships and made many contributions to the modernization of China's shipbuilding industry.
