Sanmen Gorge

The dam project of Sanmen Gorge on the Yellow River was completed on Dec. 9, 1958. Started on April 13, 1957, it was the biggest and most comprehensive project for flood control, electricity generation and irrigation aiming to tame and explore the Yellow River. Situated in Shan County of Henan province and Pinglu County of Shanxi province, the dam would form a 3,500-sq.km reservoir with a holding capacity of 64.7 billion cu.m, able to irrigate fields over an area of 40 million mu, or almost 27,000 sq.km.
