Mishi Church

At 21 Northern Dongdan Street stands one of the two important Protestant churches in Beijing. The street was originally named Mishi (Rice Market) where rice was bought and sold in the old days, giving the church its name. The church building is a three-storey structure of grey brick in Western style and a double-eaved wooden roof in Chinese style. When it was built in the 1920s, it was the headquarters of the Chinese Bible Society. Today it is the seat of the Beijing Branch of the Chinese Christian Council and the Chinese Three-Self Patriotic Movement.

During the early stage of the "cultural revolution" from 1966 to 1971, the church's activities were all stopped. The church was re-opened on Christmas Day of 1971 and services are held on Sundays, prayer-meetings on Thursday mornings, Youth Fellowship meetings on Friday evenings and evening services on Saturdays.
