McDull

McDull (Chinese: 麦兜) is a cartoon pig created by the Hong Kong artist Alice Mak (Chinese: 麦家碧) and author Brian Tse (Chinese: 谢立文). The pig, with a birthmark around his right eye, is meant to portray the lives of ordinary children in Hong Kong.

The pink piglet became popular while appearing as a supporting character in McMug comics, and thus laid the foundation for McDull’s future success in pop culture.

In 2001, the film "My Life as McDull" premiered in Hong Kong. The simple, honest, and charming pig immediately won the hearts of locals who swarmed the box office in the film’s first few weeks.

The movie details McDull's life in Kowloon with his single mother Mrs. Mak. The story begins with the young male pig as a happy kindergartener with many friends. His mother has high expectations for her son and dreams of him becoming famous, yet McDull is not a particularly smart pig, and although he has many dreams, he never succeeds in fulfilling them. Yet despite the constant disappointments, of which hard work seldom pays off, the piglet never loses confidence or his persistent kindness. His carefree nature and strong affection for his mother warm moviegoers' hearts.

After the success of "My Life as McDull," three sequels followed. "McDull, Prince de la Bun," "McDull, the Alumni," and "McDull, Kung Fu Kindergarten" were released respectively in 2004, 2006 and 2009. The final film was also released in the mainland during the same year.
