On February 3, 1996, an earthquake shook Naxi Autonomous County in Lijiang, Yunnan Province. The epicenter was recorded at 27.2 degree north latitude and 100.3 degree east longitude. By 1:00 pm on February 16, four regions of ethnic minorities had suffered, with 1 million people affected. Among these were more than 300,000 residents living in the most seriously damaged areas. There were 309 deaths, 4,070 people were in critical condition, and 12,987 people suffered minor injuries. More than 350,000 houses fell, and 609,000 were damaged. More than 30 million kg of grain was lost. Power, transportation, telecommunications and water facilities all suffered serious damage.
