The Journalism Research Institute of Peking University was officially established on October 14, 1918. Tsai Yuan-pei, the president of Peking University, drew up the rules for the institute, setting the goal as training talented journalists. The skills taught included topic selection, interviewing, editing, writing, and the organization of newspaper offices and news agencies.

The institute published News Weekly, the only publication in China devoted to the subject of journalism at that time, and the first publication to print the Chinese language horizontally rather than vertically.
