Haiyuan Earthquake

The Haiyuan earthquake occurred at 20:06:53 local time on December 16, 1920. The epicenter was in Haiyuan County, in what is now the Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region. The area around the epicenter was hit by landslides and surface cracks. Tremors were felt across 60 counties.

The earthquake reached 8.5 on the Richter scale and was followed by a series of aftershocks. It destroyed four cities and killed at least 230,000 people. The size of the area hit by the quake hampered rescue operations and rescue teams failed to reach many victims. Total casualties may have been as many as 500,000.
