First plenary session of the 15th CPC Central Committee

On September 19, 1997, the first plenary session of the 15th CPC Central Committee was held in Beijing. The session elected members and alternate members of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, members of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau, as well as the general secretary of the CPC Central Committee. The session also approved the members of the Military Commission of CPC Central Committee.
Jiang Zemin was elected General Secretary and Chairman of the Military Commission of CPC Central Committee. Members of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau are: Jiang Zemin, Li Peng, Zhu Rongji, Li Ruihuan, Hu Jintao, Wei Jianxing and Li Lanqing.
