Duo Yun Xuan
In 1900, a new shop emerged in Shanghai, Duo Yun Xuan. While dealing with the four treasures of the study, Duo Yun Xuan gradually has developed its two characteristics businesses: first, on a base of the tradition of making letter paper by itself, it has developed the copying technology of wood water printing. After a long period of artistic exploration, it has formed its special artistic style especially in showing the painting style and charm of freehand water-ink painting. Secondly, it collects old calligraphy and painting works and has saved a large number of State Key cultural relics and art treasures. It prints large-sized paper and silk-copied Chinese calligraphy and painting works by complex printing procedures.
In 1978, Shanghai Calligraphy and Painting Publishing House was founded on the base of Duo Yun Xuan. Now Duo Yun Xuan is engaged in two businesses: the publishing business of Shanghai Calligraphy and Printing Publishing House and the cultural operations of Duo Yun Xuan. In terms of publishing, it is the unique professional fine arts publishing house in China dealing with artistic books such as Chinese painting, calligraphy and seal-cutting. There are seven editing rooms in it, i.e. wood-block water printing, traditional Chinese painting, calligraphy, seal cutting, fine arts, New Year’s Painting and textbooks. In its sales department situated atNanjing Rd. (Nanjing Lu) in the downtown area of Shanghai, there are sales hall, art gallery and purchasing room for original calligraphy and painting works. It is not only a famous art gallery where calligraphers, painters and seal cutters often do academic exchanges and learn from each other by exchanging skills, but also a characteristic shop dealing with collecting and operating ancient and modern original calligraphy and painting works, sutra stele rubbings and articles for use in study. There are various stored treasures involving all the past dynasties.
