Chen Deming (陈德铭)

Chen Deming (陈德铭), was elected chairman of the mainland-based Association for Relations Across the Taiwan Straits (ARATS) on April 26, 2013.

Chen served as Minister of Commerce from December 2007 to March 2013.


Chen Deming, ethnic Han, a native of Shanghai, was born in March 1949 and joined the CPC in September 1974. He has a Master’s degree in economics and a Doctorate degree in management.

Oct. 1985 - June 1993: Deputy Director of Jiangsu Provincial Bureau of Commerce.

June 1993 - Aug. 1996: Deputy Secretary-General of the Jiangsu provincial government.

Aug. 1996 - Nov. 1997: Deputy Secretary-General and Director General of the General Office of the Jiangsu provincial government.

Nov. 1997 - Jan.1998: Deputy Secretary of the CPC Suzhou Municipal Committee; Acting Suzhou Mayor.

Jan. 1998 - June 2000: Vice Secretary of the CPC Suzhou Municipal Committee; Suzhou Mayor.

Jun. 2000 - Dec. 2000: Deputy Secretary of the CPC Suzhou Municipal Committee; Suzhou Mayor; Secretary of the CPC Working Committee of Suzhou Industrial Park.

Dec. 2000 - Nov. 2001: Secretary of the CPC Suzhou Municipal Committee; Secretary of the CPC Working Committee of Suzhou Industrial Park.

Nov. 2001 - May 2002: Member of the Standing Committee of the CPC Jiangsu Provincial Committee; Secretary of the CPC Suzhou Municipal Committee; Secretary of the CPC Working Committee of Suzhou Industrial Park.

May 2002 - Oct. 2004: Member of the Standing Committee of the CPC Shaanxi Provincial Committee; Vice Governor of Shaanxi

Oct. 2004 - Feb. 2005: Vice Secretary of the CPC Shaanxi Provincial Committee; Acting Shaanxi Governor

Feb. 2005 - May 2006: Deputy Secretary of the CPC Shaanxi Provincial Committee; Shaanxi Governor

May 2006 - Nov. 2007: Vice Minister of the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC).

Nov. 2007 - Dec. 2007: Vice Minister of Commerce.

Dec. 2007 - March, 2013: Minister of Commerce.

He is an alternate member of the 17th CPC Central Committee.
