A 7.6-magnitude earthquake hit Hualien County, Taiwan, at 1:47 am on Tuesday September 21, 1999, claiming 1,674 lives and injuring 3,924 people by 10 am the same day.

The local government also reported 2,650 residents were trapped and 219 were missing. The earthquake also affected the mainland provinces of Fujian, Guangdong, Zhejiang, and Jiangxi.
