Chinese shipping magnate Sir Yue-Kong Pao was born in 1918 in Ningbo, Zhejiang Province. He founded Hong Kong's World-Wide Shipping Group and later bought a controlling stake in the Hongkong and Kowloon Wharf and Godown Company Limited (now Wharf (Holdings)).

Among the most influential syndicates in Hong Kong, both companies gave exposure to the city's real estate, shipping terminals, public transport, hotels, and retail and telecommunications sectors. He was the first Chinese to be appointed to the board of HSBC Bank and would later become its vice chairman. In addition, he was appointed vice chairman of the Basic Law Drafting Committee, planning Hong Kong's constitution after 1997. Pao was a generous philanthropist, most notably in educational projects like helping set up Ningbo University, libraries and scholarship funds.
