Wen Zhengming (1470-1559), a Ming artist and calligrapher from an official's family, was accomplished in poetry and essay writing, as well as in calligraphy and painting. Acknowledged as the founder of the “Wumen School” of painting, Wen’s works touched a variety of subjects: landscapes, figures, flowers, orchids, and bamboo, among many others. With fine-brush techniques and the use of light colors, serene compositions were conceived in his well laid-out landscapes. Human figures also were often casually painted in isolation to bring about a feeling of internal strength. Wen’s main works include Mountain and River Landscape and Spring in Jiangnan.
