Wang Jianlin (王健林) is a Chinese billionaire and the chairman of Dalian Wanda Group, one of China's largest real estate developers.

Wang came atop the 2012 New Fortune 500 Rich List, with a personal wealth of 46 billion yuan (US$7.3 billion).

In August 2013, he was named China's wealthiest person with an estimated fortune of US$14.2 billion. According to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index, Wang was US$3.2 billion richer than Zong Qinghou, founder of Hangzhou Wahaha Group who was named China's second wealthiest person.

According to the Hurun Global Chinese Rich List 2015, Wang overtook Hong Kong's Li Ka-shing for the first time as the richest Chinese man, with a personal fortune of about US$42.6 billion.


Biography

Born in October 1954 in Dujiangyan, Sichuan Province, Wang joined the People's Liberation Army in 1970. After graduating from the Liaoning University in July 1986, he worked as director of the Office of Xigang District People's Government of Dalian City.

In 1989, Wang entered the real estate industry. In August 1992, he was appointed general manager of the Dalian Wanda Real Estate Group. In March 1993, he was appointed chairman of the Board of Directors of Dalian Wanda Group Shareholding Co. Ltd.

Wang served as delegate of the 17th National Congress of CPC, a member of the Standing Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference's National Committee, vice president of All-China Federation of Industry and Commerce, honorary president of the China Charity Federation, vice president of the China Enterprise Confederation/China Enterprise Directors Association (CEC/CEDA), and vice president of the China General Chamber of Commerce.

Over the past decades, Wang and his company have donated over 2.8 billion yuan to various charities, heading the list of donators for charity organizations in China. He was presented with the China Charity Award six times.

On May 8, 2012, Wang came atop the 500 Rich List compiled by New Fortune magazine and China Minsheng Banking Corp, with a personal wealth of 46 billion yuan (US$7.3 billion).

In July 2013, Wang announced the acquisition of British yacht maker Sunseeker and the plan to build a 200 meter-high luxury hotel at London's South Bank in a 1 billion pound ($1.54 billion) investment.

On Jan. 8, 2014, U.K. publication The Mirror published an article saying China's richest man was "ready" to make a £175 million takeover bid for the Premier League club Southampton, in order to break into the English football industry. Wang denied this "news" in an interview with Beijing News, a local Beijing newspaper.


Latest figures

The Hurun Real Estate Rich List released on Sept. 24, 2013 said that Wang Jianlin, the founder and chairman of Dalian Wanda Group, was the richest entrepreneur in the property industry in China with a personal fortune of 101 billion yuan (US$16.5 billion). It is the third time in the past four years that real estate tycoon Wang has topped the industry rich list, the list report said, noting that his fortune in real estate increased 124 percent from the year 2012.
