Wang Gang (TV host)

Wang Gang, Chinese actor and TV host

Wang Gang (王刚) is a Chinese actor and TV host. Wang is the host of Tianxiashoucang (Collections in the Country), a popular television show in Beijing known for its exciting approach to identifying genuine and fake art pieces. However, Wang recently found himself in a quandary, with some questioning whether he is guardian or destroyer of valuable antiques.

The television show features Wang and a panel of expert judges. When an antique piece is brought out on the scene, Wang and the judges examine the item to determine whether it is genuine or a forgery. If the panel rules that the item is a fake, Wang Gang will quickly do away with the fraudulent piece by destroying it with a hammer.

Tianxiashoucang and the Capital Museum, a leading authority for cultural preservation, recently held a joint exhibition to examine a collection of porcelain artifacts. Out of the 300 pieces destroyed by Wang, 30 were selected to compare with the authentic pieces displayed in the museum. Unexpectedly, many of the "fake" items destroyed on the television program were actually genuine, with some of them being highly valuable, according to Yao Zheng, a famous art collector and director of the Jade Collecting Committee of China Collectors Association.

The result has therefore triggered a hot debate on the Internet. People began to question whether Wang is actually a guardian or destroyer of valuable antiques. Some researchers assert that the authorities should support private collections by protecting them, not by discrediting and destroying them. If necessary, the authorities should assist private collectors to authenticate and refurbish their antiques.

However, the Beijing Municipal Administration of Cultural Heritage quickly dismissed allegations that the destroyed pieces were genuine after sending its own team of experts to examine the porcelain. The governmental authority expressed gratitude for the public's involvement in guaranteeing the safety of important cultural relics, and welcomed future public supervision.

Born on Dec. 22, 1948 in Jinzhou, Jilin Province, Wang grew up in the provincial capital city of Changchun. From 1969 to 1995, he served in the Jilin Military Region Art Troupe and the Shenyang Military Region Art Troupe. In 1995, he was transferred to China Central Television to become an anchorman. In 1997 he was transferred to the Central Academy of Drama.

Wang broadcasted more than 30 novels during 1980s, and among them the "Harbin Under the Curtain Of Night" made his voice known to every household in the country and won a national top broadcasting prize in 1982. In 1984 was chosen as one of the top 10 broadcasting artists in the country by the Central People's Broadcasting Station.

Since 1986, Wang has hosted more than 600 cultural programs for CCTV and local TV stations, including the "Spring Festival Gala", "Arts Grand", "Toshiba Zoo", "Life in Your Hands," "Friend" and "Tianxiashoucang".

As an actor, Wang starred in many TV serials, including the 1994 hit "Prime Minister Humpback Liu" that brought him to the pinnacle of fame. Later he starred in the TV serial "Iron Eloquent Ji Xiaolan" in cooperation with Zhang Guoli and Zhagn Tielin, and the three have since become known as the "Iron Triangle".

Wang has been married three times, and has a daughter from his first marriage and a son from his third marriage.
