China's first video telephone service connecting Beijing and Shanghai opened on September 15, 1990, on the eve of the 11th Asian Games, which were held in Beijing. The service consisted of a direct-dial telephone and a video device. The Asian Games Media Center provided a video telephone for the use of international journalists covering the games.
