The tombs of ancient Tibetan kings are located in Chonggye, hometown of Songtsen Gampo, not far from Nedong on the south side of the Yarlung Tsangpo. The burial mounds of kings, queens and ministers of the Tubo Dynasty (seventh to ninth centuries) are spread over an area of more than 3 million sq. m, According to historical records, there should be 21 tombs altogether, but only 16 still survive now. In only nine of them can the occupants be identified.
