Sun Quan (182-252), style name Zhongmou, at a young age took control over Jiangdong (southeast of the Yangtze River) with his elder brother Sun Ce, and inherited the territory at 19. In 208, the coalition forces of Sun and Liu Bei defeated Cao Cao in the Chibi Battle. In 229 Sun was proclaimed Emperor of Wu (historically referred to as the Eastern Wu) in Wuchang, and the capital was later moved to Jianye. During his reign, Sun heightened the national power of Eastern Wu, strengthened ties with Yizhou (now Taiwan Province), and set up prefectures and counties in Shanyue (now Vietnam). Sun died of illness in 252.
