South Xinjiang Railway (南疆铁路), with a total length of 1,446.37 km, opened to traffic on the morning of Dec 6, 1999.

Starting at Turpan and terminating at Kashi, the railway extends along the ancient Silk Road, passing through the Tianshan Range and to the north of the world-renowned Taklimakan Desert.

The 476.49-km Turpan-Korla section had been completed and opened to traffic in 1984, creating southern Xinjiang's first railway. The Korla-Kashi section, stretching 969.88 km, began full operation on Dec 9, 1999. With an investment of 6.3 billion yuan (US$ 923 million), construction of this section lasted three years and three months.
