Socialist harmonious society

"Harmonious society" (和谐社会 hé xié shè huì) was first used by President Hu Jintao during the 2005 National People’s Congress meeting to define the ultimate goal of China’s development. The harmonious society targets a middle-class-oriented society in which the country’s legal system is perfected, the widening income gap is narrowed, the social and economic developments are balanced and the environment is well-protected. The idea encourages the country to shift its focus from economic development to overall social development so that more people can benefit from sustainable economic growth.

The "socialist harmonious society" that China is building is defined as a stable and orderly society embracing democracy, the rule of law, equality, justice, sincerity, amity and vitality, where humans and nature are in harmony. China pledges to build a harmonious society in two decades as the concept aligns with the interests of its 1.3 billion people.
